iCLASS is a secure, high-frequency (13.56 MHz) contactless smart card technology developed by HID Global. It is primarily used for physical building access, employee identification, and secure cashless vending systems.
How it Works
Unlike traditional, older proximity (Prox) cards that transmit unencrypted data, iCLASS utilizes encryption algorithms and mutual authentication between the card and the reader. When you tap an iCLASS card, fob, or wristband on an reader, secure data is transferred over radio frequencies to verify your identity before unlocking a door or logging into a computer.
Key Features and Capabilities
- Multi-Application Storage: The cards come in different memory sizes (e.g., 2k, 16k, or 32k bits) which allows multiple, securely separated files to exist on a single card.
- Beyond the Door: In addition to building access, the cards can be configured for biometric authentication, public transportation ticketing, network log-ons, and loyalty programs.
- Multi-Technology Options: iCLASS chips can be combined with other technologies on a single card, such as magnetic stripes, barcodes, or older 125 kHz HID Proximity (Prox) chips, allowing organizations to easily upgrade their legacy systems.
